The leader of the outgoing ruling Social Democratic Party (SDSM) Dimitar Kovačevski submitted his resignation this afternoon, taking responsibility for the party's heavy defeat in the parliamentary elections held in North Macedonia on 8 May. Kovacevsky, in his letter of resignation to the members of the party bodies, also requests the convening of an extraordinary congress of the SDSM and the holding of internal party elections to elect a new president of the party. The SDSM in the May 8 parliamentary elections came third in seats, securing only 18 of the 120 seats in the House, compared to 58 secured by the opposition VMRO-DPMNE and 19 by the co-ruling Albanian party of origin, DUI.
