The leader of the pro-Russian separatists calls on Russia to occupy the whole of Ukraine

The leader of the pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine and chairman of the self-proclaimed “Donetsk People’s Republic” Denis Pushilin said today that Russia must continue its military offensive to “liberate” all of Ukraine and occupy Kyiv.

“I will say that we (must) liberate all of Ukraine, and of course the Russian city of Kiev and western Ukraine,” Pushilin told the state-run TASS news agency during the St. Petersburg World Economic Forum.

“This would allow us not to shift this heavy responsibility to the next generation,” he added.

Launching its invasion of Ukraine on February 24, Russia initially attempted to occupy Kyiv, but resistance from Ukrainian forces forced Russian forces to retreat.

Since then, Moscow has focused its attack on eastern Ukraine in the Donbas region, where Russian President Vladimir Putin has recognized the independence of two separatist territories, the Donetsk People’s Republics and Luhansk.

Moscow justifies its invasion of its neighbor by citing the need to “protect” the people of Donbass from Ukrainian forces that the Kremlin describes as Nazi.

Putin also denies the existence of a Ukrainian nation and people, believing that historically Russians and Ukrainians are one.
