The likelihood of Finland joining NATO first has increased, Sweden’s prime minister says

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristerson said today that the possibility of Finland joining the NATO before Sweden but it is only a matter of time before his country joins.

The two countries applied to join the Atlantic alliance last year, but are facing them Turkey’s objections, which accuses them of supporting members of terrorist organizations. The countries restarted talks with Turkey on the accession process last week in Brussels.

Ankara has made it clear that it has more objections regarding its accession Sweden in relation to that of Finland and, as Christerson said, Turkey’s position in this regard remains the same, which means that the two Nordic countries may not join at the same time, as they would like, APE-MPE reports.

“What we have come across in recent weeks is that the likelihood of them joining at different times has increased. Ultimately, the question is not if Sweden will join NATO, but when,” he told a press conference in Stockholm before leaving for a visit to Germany.
