A great gesture of love towards her nephew, but also towards a stranger who, thanks to her, was able to recover his health.
Liberata Sestito wanted to donate a perfectly healthy kidney to nephew on dialysis. The test cross match pre intervention, however, reported aincompatibility, which made transplantation impossible. Nonna Liberata, who is 75 years old and lives in Domodossola, at that point, decided to still donate the organ to those in need: in this way he saved the life of a stranger (in Rome) and, at the same time, helped his nephew, who had faster access to a new kidney, which arrived from Brindisi (the transplant took place in February).
It is a national program called cross over: «In the case of a living donor candidate who is incompatible for the recipient, allows you to “climb” the ranking and access a second kidney, this one compatible», explained Maurizio Borzumati, head of nephrology at the ASL Vco who has been treating Alex, 26, the nephew of Signora Liberata, for years, «through a faster process than the ordinary practice . To access this “fast track”, however, it is also necessary to donate, not just receive, and it is this, in addition to her extraordinary generosity, that prompted Signora Liberata to make the noble gesture and allocate one of her two kidneys, both in excellent health, to a recipient as needy as Alex but unknown. He didn’t have a moment’s hesitation».
Grandma Liberata’s grandson she entered dialysis at age 11 due to glomerulonephritis, inflammation linked to an alteration of the immune system, to then undergo a first transplant at the age of 14. The boy, a decade later, went on dialysis again, for a recurrence which impaired the function of the kidney he had received. Until the new transplant. “I never had the slightest doubt,” explained grandmother Liberata. “If I had another one to donate, I would donate it. I’ve had other surgeries in my life and had some anxiety, but not this time.”
