More than 130,000 passengers are forced to change scheduled flights or cancel trips. Lufthansa’s 24-hour strike causes disruption. Resolved salary issues.
Lufthansa pilots have been on strike since midnight, with around 800 flights already canceled across Germany, mainly at the major air hubs of Frankfurt and Munich.
Almost 130,000 passengers are directly affected as they have to look for other means of transport or flights with other airlines to travel over the weekend. At the same time, a wave of compensations for flight cancellations or delays is expected. Affected passengers can, according to German media, request compensation of up to 600 euros.
The strike coincides with the last weekend of the summer school holidays for the states of Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland, disrupting the plans of many families. The positive news is that flights with Lufthansa’s three German subsidiaries: Eurowings, Lufthansa Cityline and Eurowings Discover, as well as its international subsidiaries, Swiss, Austrian and Brussels Airlines, are not affected.
Failure of salary negotiations
But why are Lufthansa pilots striking again? According to the Cockpit Pilots Union, negotiations for their new salary status have failed, considering Lufthansa’s offer low, which should be reviewed.
The fact is, however, that negotiations for a new collective agreement are considered to have already failed for this year, with any attempts to break the impasse on the part of the German airlines deemed insufficient.
And all of this is of course happening at a critical time for the aviation industry and the workers in the sector, who have suffered severe wage cuts and layoffs due to the coronavirus pandemic.
However, with the uncertainty in the global economy continuing due to the war in Ukraine and the energy crisis, Lufthansa pilots are asking for at least some definite salary guarantees for the new year.
