The main color of 2022 has been named. It’s a new shade that didn’t exist before

The Pantone Color Institute named the main color of 2022 – for the first time in its 22-year history, the organization has chosen a completely new color for its award, which did not previously exist in the company’s palette. It was PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri, “a vibrant blue with a vibrant purple-red undertone, designed to evoke the glowing touchscreens of the digital world and the creative possibilities of the future.”

According to the institute, the creation of a new color for 2022 in itself symbolized the changes taking place in the world at the moment – after an intense period of isolation and uncertainty. Like last year’s selection of two colors (Ultimate Gray and Sunshine Yellow Illuminating), Very Peri’s choice was heavily influenced by its quest to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic, environmental concerns, and a broader reckoning with injustice and imperfections in current social structures.

To capture these influences, the institute blended blue (a color associated with fidelity and consistency) with a shade of red (which often conveys energy and excitement) for an unexpectedly warm blue hue that epitomizes innovation and new beginnings.

Representatives from the Pantone Color Institute said:

It’s unusual to call blue “happy,” but when you add a red element to it, that’s exactly what happens. We found it very important to create a color that would reflect the feeling of novelty.

Realizing that the colors we see now live in a digital space has opened up entirely different possibilities for us. When we choose the color of the year, it should represent what is happening at the moment. We were looking for a color that seamlessly transitions from digital to physical.
