The heavy rains that hit the coast of São Paulo left more than 1,730 displaced and 766 homeless . To date, confirmed 36 deaths 35 in São Sebastião and one in Ubatuba, according to the state government survey.

On Sunday (19), the federal government recognized a state of calamity in the region of São Sebastião, in an extra edition of the Official Gazette. The president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) visited the city accompanied by ministers and flew over the region this Monday (20).

In an interview with CNN the Minister of Institutional Relations, Alexandre Padilha, detailed the actions of the federal government in support of the affected municipalities and the state of São Paulo.

“The main issue now is to seek to save lives, identify situations of fatal victims, be able to transfer those who can be transferred immediately to hospitals, to health services, not only to the Regional Hospital of Caraguatatuba, but also the transfer to Hospital de Caraguatatuba has already increased. São José dos Campos, and seek to re-establish what we call the minimum structure for relief actions”, said Padilha.

The minister stated that the national Civil Defense system had alerted the states of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais to the forecast of increased rainfall. However, the volumes recorded were higher than expectations.

“We have a very critical situation. It is the heaviest rain that has ever existed in this region. We have regions that are completely isolated due to the road. The Navy, since yesterday, by order of President Lula, was available to seek access by sea, it was very difficult to make rescue access and to take food by sea as well. Today, these helicopters from the Armed Forces, Navy, Army, Air Force, are there many times to take food, water, rescue bodies, rescue people”, detailed the minister.

According to the latest update from the state government, with information from the State Department of Health (SES-SP), 13 adults and five children who were victims of the rains are treated at the Regional Hospital of the North Coast. Of this total, five are in serious condition and 11 are stable and two have been discharged.

Since Sunday, the State Health Units on the North coast have been on alert to receive possible injuries from the disaster that hit the region. Other health units in Baixada Santista, Alto Tietê and the Capital are also able to receive the wounded.

In addition to reinforcing assistance, SES-SP forwarded a set of inputs for assisting victims. 36 ampoules of antivenom for snakes, 5,000 bottles of sodium hypochlorite, 940 bags of glucose, 900 bags of serum, 180 intravenous kits, 30 suture kits, 30 immobilization splints, in addition to sedatives and other medications were sent.

The Ministry of Health also sent, this Monday, support kits with medicines and supplies to support and assist the victims of the heavy rains that hit the north coast of São Paulo. According to the ministry, health and environment surveillance teams are monitoring the situation.
