It is possible to talk about trends at this moment? In the middle of 2024, in a world where everything moves so quickly, where what goes viral on TikTok today will no longer be fashionable in three days, is it worth talking about what will be fashionable in a few months? Terry Barber, Global Director of Artistry of MACsays yes, and if we take the literal meaning of the word trend we can agree with him.
What are trends?
According to the dictionary, a tendency is “the propensity of something to develop or evolve in a certain direction.” It is not a norm or a trend to follow, but a way of things evolving. We can say, therefore, that trends exist: but how do they arise? «Trends originate from different places. Once upon a time it was more common for them to arise within fashion: the trends were created by the autumn-winter and spring-summer fashion shows. Today, however, trends are born from different and new places of all kinds: news, cinema, television, music… everywhere», explains Terry Barber. “They have a lot to do with social media, where everything is faster and newer.”
Not everything, however, becomes a trend. Because of this a certain attitude is needed. “It has to affect people,” Barber explains. «For me, a trend is not a specific color or shape, but just a specific attitude when wearing something. For example, a slightly grunge. It’s not about drawing the perfect line, but about evoking the look of someone who’s been partying and finds their line a little smudged. For me this is attitude. To create trends you need to change your attitude».

If you have been using social media since their inception and are interested in them beauty content creatoryou will surely have noticed the change. «About ten years ago, all the make-up was very successful, Kardashian style. All the tutorials on YouTube involved putting on makeup for hours to look perfect,” explains Terry Barber. «Now people want to go back to being cool, to wear simpler make-up and to stand out more. Ten years ago everyone started to look alike, while now we look more for individuality.” Eclecticism triumphs, «which simply means taking a little from here and a little from there, mixing old and new, expensive and streetwear».
Beyond TikTok, Terry Barber sees a common trend. «People look a lot at cinema, we are again interested in characters from the old cinemaof the 60s and 70s, and the French cinema of the 50s. Things that are a bit strange, unique… And you can see it in ordinary people, not just in the world of fashion. Trends have become real people and their way of wearing makeup.” In this sense, social media is good. “Ordinary people dress or do something in a way that suddenly goes viral, and everyone looks and says, ‘Oh, my God. This is amazing. It’s incredible.”
How are trends brought about?
When talking about trends you can make the mistake of turning them into a disguise. A trend, on the other hand, is a guide to adapt to your own style. «Our proposals provide inspiration, but then everyone can adapt them to their own needs. Trends are not meant to be copied» says Terry Barber. «They are designed to inspire, they are not rules to follow. The trick is to have the courage to play with them and bring them to your territory.”
Make-up trends for spring-summer 2025
At MAC they are experts in analyzing current influences to determine which direction make-up will go in the coming months and, after participating in the Milan, Paris and New York fashion weeks, they have compiled a guide on how we will wear makeup in the spring of 2025. But trends are a journey that you can start right now, so don’t hesitate to put into practice the ones that strike you most as soon as possible.

With this trend, MAC wanted to highlight the importance of glow. But unlike the beach glow we’re used to, this new brightness has a cooler tone and a more luxurious touch. Furthermore, it is not limited to the face, but runs down the neck and extends to the collarbones and chest.

This shade of pulverized and “talky” vintage green it originates in cinema, where it was used to create contrasts between eye makeup and skin, in order to work in synergy with lights and cameras. It is applied in bulk over the entire mobile part of the eyelid and up to the eyebrows, as was done in the past. No other color distracts us from this green.

Berries and berries are the inspiration for this shade it jumps from the lips and moves to the eyes and cheeks. A wide range of color is created around these shades with which you can create monochromatic make-up that is very flattering or simply add a touch of color to a clean, soapy look.

The 90s will continue to be very present in ours beauty routine. All the protagonist shades of that decade are back, but not only the browns, but also the bronze, khaki and plum tones. Adapted to the present day, these tones they lose some of their harshness and become more chic and refined. And pay attention to the “shaded lips” effect, because it will be back in fashion.

THE’blue eyeshadow it is linked to the history of make-up. This blue is one of the colors of royalty, as well as a symbol of status. It is a “powdery”, almost whitish pastel blue, closely associated with cinema and the world of entertainment. How to get it? Just mix your usual blue eyeshadow with concealer and you’re done.

Purple is at the far end of the visible light spectrum. It has the magic of be a little blue but also pink and this trend plays precisely with these color nuances and with purple’s ability to transform tones. It expresses modernity and above all triumphs in the iridescent versions, where all its facets are better appreciated.
