Life can take sharp turns. At 31, the second woman after Nilde Iotti, she became President of the Chamber. It was 1994. Since then many things have changed for Irene Pivettiwho today, at the age of 59, with a series of legal proceedings in which she is accused of quite a few crimes including commercial fraud, false ideology and receiving stolen goods, finds herself, for thousand euros per monthto manage the restaurant of a cooperative, a social canteen in MonzaSan Fruttuoso district.
Political activity, in the forefront, had left her. For a while she was a journalist, a columnist on TV and from 2010 an entrepreneur: she had the business network Only Italy for the promotion of Made in Italy in China.
It all comes crashing down in April 2020, when, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Guardia di Finanza seized, as deemed unsuitable, about half a million masks imported from China by a company owned by Irene Pivetti. There is talk of bills of millions of euros. The investigations begin. From there a raging river. Everything is seized from her, her accounts are blocked, people move away, and she finds it hard to go on: «I sold what I could sell», she says today with a smile that still manages to be pacified: «I’m being investigated, but I’ll retort the line per line each dispute. I ended up in a meat grinder and finding a job wasn’t easy. Having said that, I already consider myself lucky, there are people who have much less than me».
Faith helps her (“I trust in the Eternal Father, he is the rock on which we are firmly planted”) and today she appears so involved in this new project that she doesn’t seem to have anger, if anything she feels suspended, as if, at a certain period, things should unfold and work out.
We were not even disappointed that Giorgia Meloni, the new Prime Minister, did not even mention her in the list of women who have broken the glass roof in Italy: «In fact, I am very proud of this young and capable president. Now you want the presidency of the Republic ».
And if he speaks of regrets, he lists nothing material, no lost insignia: «Regrets? Having spent too little time with my children, I have always been a very busy mother».
And it is even today, in this restaurant Smackwhere you find her every day serving meals, coordinating the organization, making sure everything works: «Come, you are welcome».
