Soulage, who according to the head of the museum, Benoit Decron, died last night, Tuesday, in hospital, had worked exclusively with black since 1979, mainly with a series of works he called “Outrenoir” (“Beyond black”).
Born on Christmas Eve 1919, Pierre Soulage also created 104 stained glass windows that adorn the St. Foix church of Conk in southwestern France.
Macron bids farewell to the iconic painter
In fact, the president of France, Emmanuel Macron, also said goodbye to him, making a post on twitter referring to Soulaz’s talent to highlight the light through the shades of black.
Macron said characteristically that “Pierre Soulages knew how to reinvent the black, highlighting the light. Beyond the darkness, his works are living metaphors from which each of us derives hope.”
