The mayor of Buenos Aires called for the modernization of the tax system using blockchain

The authorities of the capital of Argentina are going to use blockchain technology to improve the efficiency of tax collection.

Buenos Aires Mayor Horacio Rodriguez Larreta spoke about new ways to optimize city governance. Among other things, the official proposes to allow residents of the city to pay taxes in bitcoins, as well as to protect the personal data of citizens using the blockchain. The plan consists of 12 tasks, which, according to Laretta, should improve the efficiency of public infrastructure through technological reforms:

“We are convinced that citizens should own their information and documents, because we believe that people are capable of taking responsibility themselves. The entire flow of data, which will only increase over time, needs to be protected using the blockchain.”

At the moment, Laretta says, about 900 different procedures have been digitalized, but in order to speed up and secure the process, it is necessary to take advantage of decentralized digital technologies. Citizens will be able to authenticate and access personal information, personal records and documents in one place.

Blockchain will allow citizens to truly control their data, the mayor of Buenos Aires believes, citing companies such as R3, ConsenSys and IBM that are already using blockchain-based identity services. At the same time, the city authorities do not plan to keep any budget funds in digital currencies or tokens. However, they still plan to use cryptocurrencies: the city will cooperate with several payment systems to instantly convert cryptocurrencies into fiat money.

In 2019, NEC Argentina, Bitcoin Argentina, and IDB Lab signed an agreement to develop a blockchain system aimed at improving access to “quality goods and services” for Buenos Aires residents.
