The mayor of Panama Mayer Mizrachi at the Bitcoin 2025 conference in Las Vegas said that the city authorities and shipowners could accelerate the passage of ships through the Panama Canal if they used bitcoins in the calculations.

According to Mizrachi, now consumers spend up to three days on the passage of courts, since the processing of traditional bank payments takes up to 72 hours. Mizrachi suggested that ships could bypass long lines on this vital marine artery if they paid for fees in cryptocurrency, for example, bitcoins.

“If you pay in bitcoins, then your ship will pass faster,” Mizrachi said.

The mayor of the city believes that in the case of all interested parties, his proposals on paying for fees for passage of courts in digital assets, this could become a “revolutionary breakthrough” for transport logistics and optimizing the operational activity of the Panama Canal.

Earlier, the City Council of Panama allowed to accept local taxes, fines and public services in bitcoins, broadcasts and dollar USDC and USDTs, with their subsequent converting into fiat currency through partner banks.
