The restrictions that apply due to the coronavirus pandemic are also relaxed by Cyprus. The Minister of Health, Konstantinos Ioannou, announced the extension of the curfew from 23:00 to 24:00, the presence of spectators in outdoor dining areas, theaters, etc. without the mandatory presentation of SafePass, as well as the reopening of nightclubs.
In statements that referred to the decisions of the cabinet, Mr. Ioannou stressed thatThe great and responsible effort made by the majority of citizens, combined with the rather advanced stage at which COVID-19 vaccinations are now, has contributed to the clear improvement of epidemiological data. “The downward trend in the percentage of positivity but also the clear reduction in the number of patients registered in the last days in our country, fills us with optimism,” he added.
According to Mr. Ioannou and as broadcast by the Athens News Agency, “the cabinet was informed today about the planning of vaccinations and the improved epidemiological indicators that are reflected in the National Report”.

«The SafePass application provides us with an additional security especially in indoor gathering places, such as churches, theaters, cinemas, conference rooms, etc., where from May 17 the percentage of physical presence increases». “All the data I mentioned”, he noted, “but mainly the need for psychological stimulation of the citizens after many months of sacrifices, led the cabinet to take the following decisions:
- Extension of the curfew from 11 pm to 12 midnight.
- Use of SafePass remains mandatory in all enclosed public spaces, such as malls, theaters, cinemas, places of worship, and / or events such as conferences and trade shows.
- SafePass presentation is not required outdoors, such as outside restaurant areas, open-air theaters / cinemas / cinemas, etc.
- Further improvements in the field of sports, which will be announced later in the day by the Cyprus Sports Organization.
The above decisions enter into force on May 17, 2021 and will then be regulated by a Decree “.

At the same time, it was decided that from June 10 they will reopen night clubs on the basis of the roadmap and the health protocol, which will be finalized in the coming days after consultation between the Ministry of Health and the stakeholders. This decision is announced for preparatory purposes and given that the vaccination coverage will continue at the same pace, leading the country closer to achieving the goal of immunity and contributing to the further improvement of the epidemiological situation.
The Cypriot Minister of Health pointed out that the application of lockdown in the previous two weeks brought the desired results, since, according to the National Report, there is a clear improvement in epidemiological indicators. The number of cases, the rate of positivity and the number of hospital admissions are declining significantly and this is encouraging for the continuation.

“At the same time, in the last three weeks, the vaccination shield of the population has been given the opportunity to proceed at a more intensive pace. Despite our initial estimates, our vaccination plan has progressed to an even younger age, due in large part to the positive response from citizens to the call for vaccination. The seriousness shown by citizens towards vaccinations fills us with optimism and allows us to hope that we can emerge victorious from this difficult battle we have been waging in recent months. “Together we managed to raise our country to third place among the countries of the European Union in terms of granting installments per 100 inhabitants”, he added.
“I would like to convey the gratitude of the State to the vast majority of our fellow citizens for the enormous sacrifices he has made in all aspects of his life over the past 15 months. At the same time, with our responsible behavior and the implementation of simple personal protection measures, we continue to improve our epidemiological picture. THE use of mask, hand washing, selecting stable groups of friends and relatives for our social activism, using the SafePass tool indoors and outdoors, are just some of the simple steps we can and should all take to our daily routine to protect ourselves and our loved ones.
The arrangements decided by the cabinet today aim at the psychological uplift of the citizens, in order to increase the willingness for cooperation. I express once again the certainty that the whole society will support the project to return to a more normal normalcy and return to a functional daily life safely. The participation of all in this effort is necessary and very important in the phase we are in. “Together, with cooperation, we will ensure our safety and health”, concluded Mr. Ioannou.
