“The Midnight Library” it was the fiction book most sought after in Brazil in the first half of 2024, with more than 29 thousand copies sold, according to a survey carried out by Publishnews, prepared based on consultations made with more than 30 bookstore chains in the country.
The work is by the British author Matt Haig 49, who also wrote “Reasons to Stay Alive” (2015) and “How to Stop Time” (2017), and was published by Bertrand Brasil, from Record publishing house, in 2021.
The book is uA science fiction and philosophical novel that talks about the infinite paths that life can take and the relentless search for the right path. The plot follows Nora Seed, an unhappy 35-year-old woman who is given the opportunity to experience the lives she could have had if she had made different choices.
Regretting the choices she made in the past, she constantly wonders what could have happened if she had lived differently. After being fired from her job and having her cat run over, Nora sees little meaning in her existence and decides to put an end to it all. However, when she finds herself in the Midnight Library, Nora is given a unique opportunity to live all the lives she could have lived.
In this place between life and death, and thanks to the help of an old friend, Nora can finally move to Australia, rekindle old relationships – or start new ones –, be a rock star, a glaciologist, an Olympic swimmer and endless other options. But are any of these other lives really better than the one she already has?
