The miner’s black day has arrived. Nvidia officially unveils GeForce RTX 30 Lite Hash Rate anti-mining graphics cards

What has been talked and written about so much lately has happened: Nvidia has officially announced the GeForce RTX 30 Lite Hash Rate video cards. Protection against mining in them is implemented at the hardware level, when Ethereum is mined, the performance drops by half. And if we compare with “tuned” models – with reduced power consumption and overclocked memory, the efficiency of mining decreases even more than 50%.

The miner's black day has arrived. Nvidia officially unveils GeForce RTX 30 Lite Hash Rate anti-mining graphics cards

Recall that back in February, Nvidia tried to limit the performance of the GeForce RTX 3060 when mining Ethereum programmatically, but the miners quickly found workarounds, and the company itself then released a driver that removed the previously imposed restrictions. Now everything is serious: new video cards designated by the LHR abbreviation have new PCI Device ID registers – it’s not a fact that you will be able to install the old BIOS version on them, but even if it does, nothing will work. Hardware protection works in conjunction with software – the 446.47 driver already supports new PCI Device IDs. They were received by all the released models of the Ampere line: RTX 3060, RTX 3060 Ti, RTX 3070 and RTX 3080. Thus, rumors were confirmed that the only 3D Ampere card that can mine Ethereum with maximum efficiency will be the RTX 3090. Debuting 29 May GeForce RTX 3080 Ti and RTX 3070 Ti will be mining protected out of the box. Deliveries of GeForce RTX 30 Lite Hash Rate video cards will begin at the end of May.

So that the purchase of a graphics card with limited performance during Ethereum mining does not come as a surprise to the user, Nvidia regulates the special marking of LHR models – the corresponding abbreviation or the inscription Lite Hash Rate will be applied to the boxes of new versions of video cards.

With this move, Nvidia is declaring its commitment to gamers. The company notes that “This extra step will allow gamers everywhere to get more GeForce cards at better prices.”… It is difficult to say how it will affect the market in reality. For six months, a large deficit has formed, and it is unlikely that it will be possible to quickly eliminate it. However, for gamers, this is definitely good news. And miners now, apparently, will switch to AMD video cards – this company announced that it does not plan to introduce any such restrictions. However, the situation with the supply of video cards of the RX 6800 and RX 6900 lines is even worse than with the supply of Ampere.
