The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine began to use the Clearview facial recognition system with a database of 10 billion photographs to identify Russian soldiers

Ukraine has begun using face recognition technology based on the Clearview artificial intelligence system, which makes it possible to identify, in particular, Russian soldiers. The company offered the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine free access to its system.

Clearview suggested that Ukraine could use the technology to reunite refugees with families, fight disinformation, check at checkpoints, and identify corpses. The company did not offer its technology to Russia.

The head of Clearview noted that other Ukrainian government agencies plan to start using this technology in the coming days. Clearview has access to more than 2 billion photos from the social network VKontakte, and in total there are more than 10 billion photos in the database.

Clearview technology has been heavily criticized over the past few years. This month, Italy fined the company 20 million euros and ordered the removal of images of Italian citizens. The UK suspended Clearview in November for violating data protection laws. Canada, Australia and France are also among the countries that ordered Clearview to remove images of their residents and citizens.
