The Ministry of Economic Development proposed to allow the mining of cryptocurrencies in regions with a surplus of energy generation and provide mining companies with more favorable electricity tariffs.
According to Izvestia, permission to mine in regions with a steady surplus of electricity generation will make it possible to utilize this surplus and help develop the economy. At the same time, in regions with a lack of energy generation, the situation will not be aggravated by consumption by miners.
Officials propose to make the connection of mining centers to local substations and energy sources cheaper. In addition, the Ministry of Economic Development proposed to recognize the mining of cryptocurrencies as a commercial activity and to levy taxes upon the withdrawal of cryptocurrencies into fiat money.
Interestingly, for individuals it is proposed to set a threshold for the use of electricity. If this threshold is exceeded, an investigation will be carried out, and, if mining equipment is found, higher electricity tariffs will be charged to the consumer.
Earlier, the State Duma sent proposals to the Russian government on regulating mining and combating illegal mining of cryptocurrency. Deputies propose to allow electricity suppliers to restrict unregistered cryptocurrency miners access to networks.
