The Ministry of Energy of Belarus is studying the potential of the mining industry

The Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Belarus reported that it is carefully studying the potential of the mining industry, as well as the possibility of legal mining of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies in the country.

Energy Minister Viktor Karankevich said that the government has begun to actively study the advantages and disadvantages of mining, as the industry is rapidly developing in China, the United States, Canada and Russia. He noted that before creating conditions for the development of mining in the country, it is necessary to study in detail the possible risks associated with this type of activity.

Earlier, the government of Belarus has already considered this issue – in April 2019, President Alexander Lukashenko proposed using excess energy from nuclear power plants for mining cryptocurrencies. Besides. in recent years, Belarus has positioned itself as a crypto-friendly country.

So, in 2017, Lukashenko signed a decree on the development of the digital economy. This document implies the legalization of activities related to cryptocurrency trading and mining. In 2019, one of the largest Belarusian banks, Belarusbank, announced the creation of an exchange platform for trading digital assets.

The Ministry of Energy of Ukraine is also discussing the prospects for mining. The Ministry of Energy proposed to create a data center with a capacity of 250 to 500 MW, which will function by using the unused energy of nuclear power plants.
