The mobile RTX 4090 turned out to be three times more powerful than the RTX 3080 Ti: however, only in a couple of games

Two weeks ago, as part of CES 2023, NVIDIA employees held a major presentation, officially introducing the mobile versions of video cards from the RTX 40 line to the world. And, which is quite usual for such events, the management of the “green company” promised gamers insane performance – RTX 4090, for example, according to the information from the slides, should provide performance on par with the desktop RTX 3090. Sounds crazy, because the RTX 3090 comes with a giant heatsink to provide impressive performance, which simply does not fit inside the laptop. Fortunately, yesterday, January 19, the first real tests appeared, which clarified a lot.

The author of the Jarrod’s Tech YouTube channel compared two gaming laptops – the fresh Razer Blade 16 based on the RTX 4090 graphics card and last year’s Razer Blade 17 based on the RTX 3080 Ti. And although the user himself said that the new mobile video card impressed him with its performance in games and special software, the graphs show a fairly significant increase in performance. For example, the RTX 4090 laptop in Portal (with the graphics update) saw a 168.2% performance increase over the RTX 3080 Ti. However, it is worth noting that this comparison is not entirely correct – in the first case, the game is tested with DLSS 3, and in the second – with DLSS 2. The new upscaling technology, of course, works much better than the old one.

Moreover, it is worth clarifying that the new laptop is powered by a 13th generation Intel Core i9-13950HX processor with 24 compute cores, while last year’s laptop is powered by a 12th generation Intel Core i7-12800H with a total of 14 compute cores. It is also worth understanding that the new Razer Blade 16 is powered by a new generation of DDR5-5600 RAM, while the Razer Blade 17 has DDR4-4800 memory. Considering that DLSS 3 is two to three times more efficient than DLSS 2 in some video games, as well as the difference in hardware performance, it’s safe to say that the real difference between the RTX 4090 and RTX 3080 Ti for laptops would be very small.

Probably because of this, the author of Jarrod’s Tech decided not to directly compare gaming laptops in the same games without DLSS – in his video there is a comparison of the results of a new video card with DLSS 3 and without upscaling technology, as well as comparisons of video cards with DLSS 3 and DLSS 2. The situation is reminiscent of early reviews of the next generation NVIDIA graphics cards for desktop, when select journalists and content authors received new items before anyone else, but at the same time decided not to directly compare the performance of video cards, publishing only test results in games that support DLSS 3. If the gamer does not play five selected designs, the performance gains are ridiculous for the price you pay for an RTX 4090 for laptops.
