The most anticipated TV series of 2023 not only concern stories already known and very loved (from Ted Lasso to Successionfrom The Crown to You), but new tales that are ready to intrigue the audience. Among the titles that arouse greater curiosity an Italian also stands out, The lying life of adultsadaptation of the homonymous novel by Elena Ferrante (E/O Editions) with Valeria Golino and Alessandro Preziosi. He also has a tricolor imprint Django – The serieswhich stages a modern and feminist western thanks to the vision of Francesca Comencini.
The other stories bother the Hollywood giants instead, from Helen Mirren to Harrison Ford, from Emily Blunt to Woody Harrelson. Sometimes they draw hands down on previous stories, as was the case with the prequel Berlin, centered on the character of Pedro Alonso, spearhead of the Professor’s gang in La casa di Carta. It is not the only example: just think of Bridgertonwhich dedicates an unpublished project to Queen Carlotta, which the creator Shonda Rhimes (Grey’s Anatomy) defines as his Beyoncé.
They all have in common the ability to escape into different, unknown and sometimes dangerous worldswhich boast a visionary touch (as in the case of Copenhagen Cowboys by Nicolas Winding Refn) and sometimes indie or decidedly pop. Whatever happens, viewers will go on unforgettable journeys over the next twelve months and these ten TV series arriving in 2023 are undoubtedly ones to keep an eye on.
1. Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story
Bridgerton, the Regency series of Netflix’s record born from the novels of Julia Quinn (Mondadori), has created new characters compared to the books. The most successful is undoubtedly Queen Carlotta, to whom a whole series of hers is now being dedicated, arriving soon on the platform. Distantly inspired by a real historical figure, she is a sovereign who subverted the English social order of the nineteenth century, promulgating racial equality. Judging by the first trailer of the new project, which traces the love story with the king, it is a coming of age in a royal sauce that intertwines eros and romance.
2. The English
Emily Blunt launches into the western The English (coming soon on Paramount+) with great fervour: in fact, it takes a cool head to venture into unknown lands and across the ocean. Especially if you are a charming and aristocratic English woman in 1890. But the loss of a child leads to unimaginable consequences and she is ready to leap into the future: her Lady Cornelia Locke does not accept rejections or disrespect, or at least that was used to the UK. When she finds herself in front of the Far West, every rule changes.
3.Daisy Jones & The Six
The fictional rock band Daisy Jones & The Six arrives on TV (from March 3 on Prime Video) as an adaptation of the homonymous novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid (Sperling & Kupfer) which stages a journey through the Seventies full of sex, drugs and rock & roll. The cast is led by Riley Keough (Elvis Priesley’s niece) and includes charming and beloved talents, from Sam Claflin (Hunger Games) to Camila Morrone, from Suki Waterhouse to Josh Whitehouse. Sparks are expected.
4. 1923
Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford star in the epic prequel to Yellowstone which traces the story of the Duttons starting from these illustrious ancestors. The characters grapple with a period of history filled with catastrophes, such as pandemics and droughts, as the Great Depression sweeps through the Mountain West. A western with all the trimmings.
5. Citadel
An adrenaline-pumping spy story with an all-star cast that includes Richard Madden (Game of thrones), Priyanka Chopra Jonas (Quantum) and Stanley Tucci (The devil wears Prada). The visionary Russo brothers stage a thriller that already has an Indian and an Italian spinoff. The budget? One of the most expensive on the small screen.
6.Copenhagen Cowboys
Nicolas Winding Refn’s series (from January 5 on Netflix) was presented at Venice Film Festival: it is a noir thriller that talks about revenge and mysteries set in Copenhagen. In a world where nothing is as it seems, the project has a brutal and bewitching visual power.
7. White House Plumbers
Based on the novel of the same name, it tells of an undercover investigative unit at the White House organized by the Pentagon to ensure that confidential information is not leaked to the press. After the Watergate scandal these agents try to regain control of the public narrative. The protagonists are Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux as E. Howard Hunt and G. Gordon Liddy, two decidedly unconventional types.
8. Django – the series
Francesca Comencini’s witty eye rewrites the canons of the classic western with a modern, biting and feminist series (from February on Sky and NOW after the preview at Rome Film Festival). Django is played by Matthias Schoenaerts while Noomi Rapace lends her face to the enigmatic and very powerful Elizabeth. It’s a story of redemption and redemption, of regret and revenge.
9. Berlin
Pedro Alonso returns as the criminal known as Berlin to tell who he was before joining the gang of his brother, the Professor de The paper house. The prequel to the Spanish heist story promises sparks, always on Netflix. Alex Pena, the creator of the Iberian cult, has always confessed that he regretted the artistic choice to kill the beloved character. In his defense it must be said that he imagined that the series would end right after the success of the coup on the State Mint of Madrid. He never would have imagined that it would become a worldwide cult.
10. The lying life of adults
From January 4 on Netflix, the adaptation of Elena Ferrante’s novel of the same name is a journey between lies and secrets set in Naples in the 1990s. Family feuds resurface after time immemorial to unleash new and unpredictable dynamics when the young protagonist decides to reopen a submerged chapter in the story of her father Andrea (Alessandro Preziosi), who has always been at odds with her sister Vittoria (Valeria Golino).
