They show the beauty of the seabed, the richness of biodiversity, but also the threats that loom over our seas: are the winning photos of the photo contest “Mediterranean, a sea to discover” (which you see in the gallery above) launched by WWF S.U.B (Save Underwater Biodiversity, the WWF community dedicated to the protection of marine biodiversity which includes sea lovers, divers and diving) during the Summer 2020 GenerAzione Mare Campaign.

Sponsored by the International Academy of Underwater Sciences and Techniques and organized with the collaboration of the Aquarium of Genoa, the Italian Federation of Sport Fishing and Underwater Activities – FIPSAS and the 5 Terre Academy association, the competition awarded seven images chosen by a jury of experts taken by professional photographers and freedivers or amateurs.

The themes are “The sea and its environment” understood in its positive and negative meanings, then “The great beauty” or the fascination of marine animals, e “Rare and alien species” dedicated to the less spotted species in the Mediterranean.

Alfredo Milazzo is the only winner in the professional category with three shots that portray a moray eel trapped in an illegal net in the Plemmirio Marine Reserve (SR), a hedgehog photographed in Scilla, an oriental moray photographed in the Plemmirio Marine Reserve: a widely subtropical species widespread in the eastern Atlantic waters, which is beginning to spread Mediterranean. Among the most significant photos of amateurs, the image of a common octopus trapped in the den by the plastic, taken by Marta Panero, and a moray eel in its burrow, taken by Alessandra Puccini, winner in the category “The great beauty” (it is the cover of this article).

The photos will be published in the magazine Digital panda, exhibited during virtual and real exhibitions, and all the winners were awarded with the Pandino of papier-mâché that WWF delivers to its partners and witnesses more attentive to environmental issues.
