The movement in the AIA reached the levels of 2019 in June

The traffic at Athens International Airport, which is almost at the same level as in June 2019, and the strong dynamics recorded for the next period, despite the adverse conditions, was the message of optimism captured in the context of the press conference for the international conference Aviation Event which takes place on Friday July 1st at the Athens Metropolitan Expo exhibition center.

Already, as reported by the Director of Communication and Marketing of Athens Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport, Ioanna Papadopoulou, the traffic recorded this June reaches 94% of the corresponding month of 2019, despite the fact that important markets are absent, such as China, Russia, Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine. A fact indicative that we have a dynamic summer ahead of us. In particular, as regards flights for the month of June, they have returned to 97% of the corresponding month of 2019. “Since the beginning of the year, despite the travel restrictions and the pandemic, traffic has returned to 80% of the corresponding period of 2019 and that too is extremely important,” he noted.

The rising cost of living, however, raises concerns about how the last quarter of the year will play out and how this will affect the travel and tourism industry and is one of the topics expected to be discussed at tomorrow’s Aviation Event.

This conference takes place twice a year and it is the first time that it is held in Athens with co-organizers Athens International Airport, EOT and the Municipality of Athens.

As stated by the head of strategic planning of the Athens Development and Tourism Promotion Company (EATA), Alexia Panagiotopoulou, the development of tourism is one of the priorities of the Municipality of Athens, always combined with ensuring the quality of life of the residents. “During the pandemic we were given the opportunity to implement the strategy of the municipality regarding the holistic approach and treatment of the destination and not just as a tourist destination but as a place where both residents and visitors will have the same quality of life , the same possibilities. We do not separate the local economy from the tourist economy,” said Ms. Panagiotopoulou and emphasized: “We started with the evaluation by the global organization of sustainable tourism, which checks not only the buildings, the flow of visitors, etc. . but also how waste is managed, how spaces are upgraded, etc. We are moving forward with sustainability and sustainability in mind. At the same time, the tourist season in Athens is expanding while we see new investments. In 2021, while we were still in the pandemic, 38 new hotels were opened within the limits of the Municipality of Athens, most of them four and five stars, which translate into 1,600 beds”, emphasized Ms. Pa Nagiotopoulou.

The CEO of Aviation Event, Marcel Riwalsky, and the CEO of Helvetic Airways, Toblas Pogorevc, spoke about the importance of the conference and the special conditions shaping today’s reality, topics which are expected to be extensively discussed tomorrow.
