The moving story of this grandpa who sells lollipops and has written 17 books of poems

They say that if you choose a job that you like, you will not have to work a day of your life. However, on many occasions, what we are passionate about cannot be our main job, that is, we cannot make a living from it.

This does not mean that we should put aside what we like, on the contrary, we can take advantage of our circumstances to dedicate enough time to both activities, and our work can help us to finance the activities that we really like to do. That is the case of Erivaldo Alencar, a salesman who is also a poet.

Love for literature

Erivaldo Alencar is a 72-year-old man who has sold popsicles and ice cream for almost 20 years. In addition to his trade as a salesman, Erivaldo is a poetry writer. He has written 17 poetry books, 75 twine (popular literary brochures) and more than 2800 poems that he publishes on his blog.

He began writing in 1998 and today it is such a passion that he does not leave home without a pen and paper, ready to translate his ideas at the precise moment when inspiration strikes.

I am at work or walking down the street. On the bus, traveling. No matter. When inspiration comes, I feel that touch. So I already have the pen and a sheet of paper. I have to take advantage, because suddenly the inspiration goes away and for it to come back, sometimes it takes a while.

A whole life story

Erivaldo worked in the fields since his childhood. At the age of five, he was already taking care of his family’s livestock. In addition, throughout his life, he moved many times due to job opportunities he found and at one point in his life he even started an electronics workshop. Since 2002 he has been selling pallets, since his age and physical condition no longer allow him to do field work, which is very physically demanding.

The artistic streak was inherited from his father, who was a viola singer. But the story of how Erivaldo discovered his love for literature is something unusual, since it was because of a disappointment with the sport, as he founded the Acopiarense Soccer League and was president of it for three years.

I made a commitment to God to show me a way to live. Not because of the economic factor, but because it was difficult for me to put sport aside. I asked him to give me something to live in peace.

“Every artist wants to be recognized”

Although his earnings from the sale of pallets are not very large, he manages to make them pay off, and he has financed the publication of his books himself. He dreams of one day being able to dedicate himself to writing full time and have a publishing house publish his poems.

Every artist has the desire to be recognized, he wants the guarantee of being able to say that he is a writer. With my book already published, anyone will be able to read my work. This excites me a lot.

A lawyer specialized in publishing law named Raúl Ribeira advised him for the publication of his first book, poetry cocktail. The lawyer gave the following statement about Erivaldo.

In addition to elevating him as an artist, we want to remind him of his value as a simple man, a fighter and with a giant’s heart, who always welcomed everyone.
