Renesas Electronics has announced that its R-Car H3 and R-Car M3 SoCs have been selected by Toyota Motor for the next generation of car multimedia systems. Toyota’s next-generation multimedia system will debut for the first time in the Lexus NX, scheduled for release in November 2021. It is planned that these systems will be installed in other Lexus and Toyota cars.

Toyota’s next-generation infotainment system includes a high-resolution widescreen widescreen touchscreen display up to 14 inches. The display area can be flexibly divided into sections and zoomed in and out, taking advantage of a combination of advanced functionality and convenience. The system has voice recognition features such as quick start in response to voice commands, car sound system, and over-the-air (OTA) software updates.

Renesas’ R-Car single-chip systems provide the ability to import map information, images and video from user devices, including smartphones, and output to a large display. They are also responsible for functions such as touchscreen display control, voice recognition via microphone input, and audio output to multiple speakers. In addition, the built-in security features of the SoC R-Car are entrusted with secure OTA software updates.

Since the functions of the multimedia system differ depending on the car model, Toyota uses the R-Car H3 in systems for the more expensive models with the maximum equipment, and the SoC R-Car M3 can be found in other car models.
