There is no evidence that foreign forces are responsible for the drones that were seen flying near Sweden’s nuclear plants in January, the prosecutor in charge of the investigation said today, speaking on the country’s public radio.
In mid-January, police sent patrols and helicopters to Forsmark’s nuclear power plant to chase such an unmanned aircraft flying over the area. But they did not manage to catch it.
Other drones were spotted at the Oskarsamn and Ringhalls nuclear power plants. Forsmark and Ringhals belong to the state-owned company Vattenfall, while Osarshamn belongs to the German company Uniper SE. These three plants generate about 30% of Sweden’s total electricity generation.
Prosecutor Hans Ίchrmann told the radio that there was no evidence that foreign forces were responsible for the drone flights. It is also unclear what exactly was seen near the factories, he added.
The incidents took place around the same time that the Swedish army began patrolling the Baltic island city of Gotland amid a growing crisis in NATO-Russia relations.
