The mystery of Frogmore Cottage and the other royal mansions that nobody wants

Among the many properties owned by the Queen Elizabeth and the British Crown, there are some where none of the Windsors want to live. In recent days, for example, there has been a lot of talk about Frogmore Cottage: Harry of England e Meghan Markle (who lived there just a handful of months before saying farewell to the royal family) had it loaned to Eugenie in York love. The princess, however, in just six weeks realized that the mansion located in a secluded corner of the Windsor estate, in the beautiful gardens of Frogmore House, it wasn’t for her and her husband Jack Brooksbank. And he hastily moved to the Royal Lodge, which has been the official residence of his father Andrea since 2003, where his mother also lives. Sarah Ferguson.

What made them flee so quickly? Frogmore Cottage is lovely and recently refurbished (Harry and Meghan spent, and returned after their resignation as “royal senior”, 2.4 million pounds) but it’s only a 15 minute drive from Heathrow Airport, the main British airport, and as if that were not enough it is under one of the most popular routes. The incessant noises, 24 hours a day, of planes in take-off and landing, the Brooksbank couple would soon be exhausted, probably also worried about the rest of the baby on the way.

Frogmore Cottage isn’t the only royal residence that doesn’t seem to appeal to any of the Windsors. For mysterious reasons, Kensington Palace Apartment # 1 cannot find tenants either, adjacent to that of the Cambridge (at number 1A) once belonged to the princess Margaret, sister of Queen Elizabeth. Number 1 was the residence of the Dukes of Gloucester, the cousins of the sovereign who left him in September 2019 to move to a nearby villa.

On the departure of the Gloucesters, Queen Elizabeth offered the home to Harry and Meghan, but they refused it citing the following motivation: the residence needed complicated renovations that would have forced them to wait two years before they could move. More likely the Sussexes declined the invitation because they had no intention of finding each other like neighbors Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton. Be that as it may, since then none of the royals has shown interest in occupying Apartment 1 which has 21 rooms spread over several floors. Fault, perhaps, of the ghost of Margaret, who according to legend wanders in the corridors.

Also the future of Buckingham Palace, with Elizabeth II and the prince Filippo confined due to coronavirus in Windsor, it is uncertain. Charles of England has already made it known that when he is king (or regent) he does not intend to move to the palace. Williamfrom you, prefers Windsor. At the moment at Buckingham Palace only a few staff members occupy private apartments, while the rest of the building is used as offices, with rooms reserved for investitures, banquets and official engagements. But Carlo, for the iconic mansion, would have all other plans. In fact, it seems that he means transform it into a tourist attraction open all year round.
