The mystery of Sonila Cani’s death, from the Italian dream to the nightmare of prostitution

I think she committed suicide.” But a few months later, he changed his story, stating that his wife had been killed because she was accused of spying on the police. He also reported the disappearance of 17 thousand euros from their home, suggesting a possible economic motive. His statements, however, never convinced the investigators.

Sonila appeared as a cheerful young mother dedicated to her child, and hid her reality of suffering from her loved ones. He had left Albania driven by the hope of building a better future. «He wanted to studyshe was the best in school,” recalls her mother, Sose, who reported to Press how her daughter’s Italian dream turned into a nightmare.

The young woman, who adored her child, video-called her parents every evening to have them talk to her grandson. But he had never said a word to them about the hell he was experiencing. “She was cheerful as always”, is the last memory of her mother, who heard her a few hours before the tragedy.
