Trump stops the US tariff policy for 90 days

In a sense, it would seem that the world beat Trump in the first round of this commercial war. The indices of market American stock market were sold in mass in the three sessions following the new Trump tariff policy, which was announced for the first time last Wednesday. Wall Street denounced the policy in a generalized way, and some of Trump’s allies, such as Elon Musk, belittled their commercial advisor Peter Navarro. It seems that the play worked.

Trump gave in Wednesday after just one week. Under the new policy, the Trump administration will maintain its 10% tariff rate over all foreign imports, but will delay its much higher rates, such as 24% over Japan and 46% over Vietnam, for the moment.

However, Trump did not yield in the case of China and, on the other hand, announced a 125% tariff rate on Chinese products due to that nation’s response to announce their own additional tariff of 34% to US products. The proposed base rate had been 104% on Chinese products until Tuesday, after several rounds of new tariffs.

On Wednesday morning, China announced that it would abandon its additional tariff rate of 34% on US products and, instead, would adopt a rate of 84%.
