The multipurpose laboratory module Nauka has successfully docked to the Russian segment of the ISS – the Zvezda module. This was reported by the press service of Roscosmos.
After the commissioning of Nauka, the Russian segment of the ISS will receive additional volumes for the arrangement of workplaces and storage of cargo, placement of equipment for the regeneration of water and oxygen, the conditions for the stay of astronauts will improve and become more comfortable, and the safety of the entire ISS crew will also increase.
At about 18:15 Moscow time, it is planned to open the hatch of the transition compartment of the Zvezda module, and in a few minutes – the opening of the hatch of the Nauka module and the entry of the crew into the living area of the instrument-sealed compartment.
This docking was the first since 2010, when the small research module Rassvet No. 1 was docked to the Russian segment of the ISS. Nauka took the place of the Pirs docking module, which was disconnected from the ISS and was routinely flooded in the Pacific Ocean on July 26.
