The Netherlands plans to stop using Russian fossil fuels by the end of the year, the government announced today, pledging to spend approximately 623 million euros on initiatives to companies to store gas in large storage facilities.
The government has said it is focusing on energy savings, greener policies and more energy imports from other countries.
About 44% of Dutch energy use is based on natural gas – one of the highest in Europe – but only about 15% of Dutch gas comes from Russia, according to government estimates.
As part of its efforts to break free from Russia, the Dutch government has announced that it will compensate companies for storing gas at a Bergermir plant – one of the largest in Europe – for the winter.
