The Netherlands doubles its offshore wind energy target by 2030

The Dutch government announced today that it is doubling the forecast for offshore wind energy production in the country by 2030, in part thanks to the designation of three new areas in the North Sea where offshore wind farms will be built.

“This is an important step in the transition to a more sustainable energy,” Dutch Climate and Energy Minister Rob Geten said in a statement.

By 2030, the Netherlands also wants to “produce much more sustainable energy so that it no longer needs to import coal, gas or oil from other countries such as Russia,” he said when asked by Dutch public television NOS.

The government has designated three new areas for wind farms off the Netherlands and confirmed the designation of two previously designated areas.

The wind farms to be built in these areas at sea will allow the production of 10.7 GW of additional wind energy by 2030, according to the government.

“With these five areas, the projected total capacity for offshore wind energy will double to almost 21 gigawatts by 2030,” the government said.

“An additional 10.7 GW represents double the electricity consumption of all Dutch households,” Geten said in a statement.

According to the latter, offshore wind energy will become the “largest source of electricity by 2030” for the Netherlands.
