The new ambassador in Washington will be appointed by Moscow

The Kremlin said today that a new Russian ambassador to the United States will be appointed, dismissing speculation that relations with Washington are deteriorating at the end of the tenure of acting envoy Anatoly Antonov. Antonov, 69, who was born in Siberia and is a career diplomat, has been the head of the Russian embassy in Washington since 2017. He said in July that his appointment there was coming to an end. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said President Vladimir Putin is not currently scheduled to receive Antonov, but added that an ambassador has the opportunity to report to the president daily.
