AD Italy And NOMAD announce the launch of the first chapter of an exciting new collaboration at the new edition to be held in St. Moritz from 23 to 26 February 2023and which will focus on the theme of sustainability in global creativity.
This winter, creatives and leading names in international design meet at the former Sustainable Design Summit in the Engadine, at the brand new NOMAD location, the Hotel Grace La Margna St. Moritz. AD Italia has invited the 100 creatives of its famous annual ranking and the most important names in the sector to participate in the summit: one of the highlights will be a round table with invited speakers to bring their valuable contribution to a more sustainable vision of the future.
From New York Cyrill Gutsch, CEO of Parley for the Oceans, a frontline ocean advocacy organization that brings together creators, thinkers and leaders to raise awareness of the beauty and fragility of the oceans. Gutsch will talk about the “Material Revolution”, or how the creative community can rethink, redesign and reinvent the materials of the future, but also about the role of consumers and brands. Additionally, Parley for the Oceans will bring a special project to NOMAD dedicated to this material revolution.
Tsherin Sherpa, Nepalese artist based between California and Kathmandu, whose practice arises from his personal experiences within the Himalayan diaspora and involves a constant exchange between tradition and modernity. Sherpa’s collaboration with carpet brand Mt. Refuge is rooted in ancient Buddhist traditions, blending past craftsmanship and modern aesthetics, for a series of limited-edition tiger-patterned carpets, one of this edition’s special projects.
Rossana Orlandi, director of the Rossana Orlandi Gallery in Milan, one of the galleries on display at NOMAD. Orlandi was invited to talk about RoGUILTLESSPLASTIC, the international project she conceived in 2019 together with Nicoletta Orlandi Brugnoni. The aim of the project is to inspire the international creative community to explore a new design and production philosophy, using innovative materials that derive from re-Waste, and to discover the infinite possibilities for their transformation.
Demet Müftüoglu, creative director, curator and co-founder of ISTANBUL’74. Müftüoğlu will talk about “Flags for the Future: A Sustainability Project Supporting the Artistic Community”, a project in collaboration with Utöpia which presents a series of artist flags produced in a limited edition and made from recycled plastic waste from the oceans, with the 100 % of sales proceeds that will go to finance non-profit organizations active in the sector.
Francesca Neri Antonello, founder of FNA Concept. FNA Concept was born from Francesca Neri Antonello’s desire to create a team of professionals with whom to follow and implement architecture, interior design, design and landscaping projects all over the world. Renovate, build, decorate and work with eco-oriented craftsmen. On the occasion of NOMAD, FNA Concept will collaborate with VOLUMNIA for a special project entitled “Wearables”. At the summit, Neri will talk about the project and the role of sustainability in her creative process.
For this special occasion, AD Italia and NOMAD will work side by side for four days on the production of digital content that can be enjoyed in real time on AD Italia’s digital channels through videos, interviews, stories and posts on social networks and insights on the website. One focus will be special on-site interviews with artists, designers and galleries about their practices and approaches. Other events will be organized by NOMAD, together with AD Italia, always on site, stimulating dialogue and discussion on sustainability, a crucial topic of our time.
Furthermore, a series of special initiatives will take place during the days of NOMAD, starting with a gala dinner at the new Langosteria in St. Moritz in partnership with Poliform – a leading company in the international design sector – and with the support of Franciacorta, and finally a post-summit cocktail with the participation of Parley and Phillips.
All the material relating to the first Sustainable Design Summit will be collected in the special issue of AD Italia dedicated to sustainability, to be released in May 2023.
NOMAD has always pursued a visionary and avant-garde mission, as well as promoting practices that combine tradition and contemporary aesthetics. In line with its mission, NOMAD has always valued traditional craftsmanship, according to UNESCO “probably the most tangible manifestation of cultural heritage”, and approaches to art and design that are environmentally friendly, providing an alternative to mass production, resource exploitation and extractivism. The craftsmanship, the promotion and creative recovery of ancient traditions and know-how are an integral part of safeguarding the planet and creating a more sustainable future. In short, art, design and architecture can play a significant role and leave a positive impression.
This is just the first step of the partnership with AD Italia which will continue throughout 2023. Through the creation of a discursive platform in the world of contemporary art and design that puts sustainability first, the goal is to bring about change and , consequently, have an impact on the future. NOMAD looks forward to seeing this partnership develop further at the next edition in Capri this summer.
