UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has today appointed Catherine M. Russell, a close associate of President Joe Biden, director of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), said Stephen Duzaric, a spokesman for the United Nations.
Russell will succeed her compatriot Enrietta For, who resigned in July.
Kathryn M. Russell, 60, has been Biden’s adviser and director of the White House’s staff.
Biden hailed his colleague’s “leadership skills, experience, wisdom and empathy” in a statement.
Russell has previously worked for the State Department and the Department of Justice. He was again in charge of the White House during the presidency of Barack Obama.
For submitted her resignation in July but agreed to remain in office until a new Unicef director is appointed. Traditionally, the executive directors of the Fund have been Americans since its inception in 1946.
