It was a special day that of Friday 28 May for the Spanish royal family, united on the occasion of the confirmation of the princess Leonor. The ceremony, as it had happened for communion, together with classmates, the fourth B of the Santa Maria de Los Rosales college, where the eldest daughter of Felipe VI and Letizia Ortiz she studies. Leonor and her companions received the sacrament in the Nuestra Señora de la Asunción church, in Aravaca, a district of Madrid, in a celebration for a few, in compliance with anti Covid-19 regulations.
However, there was no lack of opportunity to take some family-size photos. Together with the birthday girl, her parents and her younger sister Sofia, 14, she too is a student in the same institute as Leonor. The princesses, almost the same age, in recent months have appeared very different, as it should be. Their styles are moving away and each one begins to express their personality: they no longer dress the same and even the hairstyles are different, as will be different, very soon, the commitments. Leonor has already begun to study as a queen, and to take her first steps independently.
On 24 March the princess took part in her first official engagement alone, on the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary of the Instituto Cervantes in Madrid and at the end of the summer she will move abroad to complete high school. He will study in Wales, at the United World College, already attended by Elisabeth of Belgium and by Willem Alexander of Holland. The king’s second child, Alexia, is also expected for the new academic year, the two-year period 2021-2023.
The role of Sofia, the little girl of the house, is different, but in her case the freedom granted to the second children will not be excessive. To be part of the royal house, he can only have representative commitments, as Felipe decided when he ascended the throne. Blame the judicial experiences of his brother-in-law and younger sister Cristina, who taught him that there is no need to mix crown and economic interests of any kind.
The “grown-up” life is still far away, we just have to wait to understand what women they will become. What is certain is that both are already beloved, new faces of a monarchy not well seen by everyone, and full of future responsibilities.
