Important new projects that shield the resilience of the National Transmission System and strengthen domestic and international electricity interconnections, include the Preliminary Plan of the Ten-Year Development Plan (DPA) 2023-2032 of the Independent Electricity Transmission Operator, which has now been made public.
With the new DPA 2023-2032, with a total budget of 4 billion euros, IPTO is dynamically continuing its investment program, which has a forward-looking plan, as more than half of the funds will be invested by 2026, the Administrator said in a statement.
International interconnection projects are being strategically upgraded
In the ten year plan 2023-2032 of IPTO, the Greece – Egypt interconnection. In the next period, it is planned to develop closer cooperation for this key project, between IPTO and the Transmission System Operator of Egypt.

An important new project of IPTO that will shield the security and reliability of the system of Crete in conditions of increased RES penetration, is the installation of a new AC Chopper system. The project budget, which is expected to be completed in 2024, is estimated at 20m euros.
Also in Crete, the cable connection of the new Chania II Substation is underway and at the closing of the Kastelli-Chania loop, with the construction of a new 150 kV Substation in Kantanos and two new 150 kV Transmission Lines Kasteli-Kantanos and Chania-Kantanos.
Critical infrastructure in Northern and Western Greece is being renewed
DPA 2023-2032 envisages new projects for the replacement of obsolete equipment in Substations and High Voltage Centers in Northern and Western Greece, further strengthening the resilience of the operation of ESMIE. Specifically, new upgrade projects will be implemented at the Melitis, Amyntaio, Agios Dimitrios and Arachthos substations, as well as at the South Pedio Mine Substation, allowing the safest handling of the production of RES units. At the same time, a new project for the replacement of obsolete cables is being launched in areas of Thessaloniki, with cable lines of modern technology.
The big projects of the island connections continue
-Her emblematic work is progressing rapidly Crete – Attica interconnection implemented by the subsidiary of IPTO Ariadne Interconnection, with a horizon of completion in 2024. The project, with a total budget of more than 1 billion euros, will connect Western Attica with Heraklion, Crete with electric cables with a length of 340 km. kV and a total capacity of 1,000 MW.

At the beginning of 2022, the tenders for the other three islands of the southwestern Cyclades will be held. interconnected with Attica via Lavrio, a year later, in 2024.
-By the end of the decade, IPTO is going to connect the Dodecanese and the islands of the Northeast Aegean, as part of a new investment cycle, with a total budget of € 2.35 billion. According to DPA 2023-2032, the first phase, with a horizon of completion in 2027, provides for the interconnection of Kos and Rhodes with the mainland, through Corinth, as well as the interconnection of Lemnos-Lesvos, through Eastern Thrace. The second phase, with a horizon of completion in 2028, envisages the interconnections of Skyros-Evia, Lesvos-Chios, Kos-Samos and Rhodes-Karpathos, while the project is completed in 2029 with the interconnections of Lesvos-Skyros and Chios-Samos.
In the summer of 2022, the interconnection of Skiathos with the mainland system, through Evia, in the context of an investment of 57 million euros. This project will ensure the smooth electrification of the archipelago of the Northern Sporades.
-The IPTO investment program for the Ionian Islands provides for projects amounting to approximately 100 million euros by 2025, aiming at their safe supply by the Land System. The planned projects include the replacement of the cable connection Kyllini-Zakynthos, the upgrade of the interconnection Lefkada-Kefalonia as well as a new interconnection between Igoumenitsa and Corfu.
