The New York Times Co announced today that it has acquired Wordle, an online word game whose popularity has risen sharply recently, for a low seven-figure sum, which has remained unclear.
The acquisition will help the New York Times expand its digital content as it strives to reach its target of 10 million subscribers by 2025.
This online game gives the player six opportunities to guess the secret word of the five letters of the day with as little effort as possible.
Wordle – originally released in October by former Reddit software engineer Josh Wardle – will continue to be available for free and there will be no changes to its rules, the NYT said.
“Wordle will now be part of our daily lives, giving millions of extra people around the world another reason to turn to The Times to meet their daily news and life needs,” he added.
Games and puzzles are an important part of NYT’s strategy to keep audiences focused on its applications and websites, as more readers use their mobile phones and tablets for their daily dose of news and entertainment.
