Nintendo has shared its financial results for the last quarter. The company reported profit of $ 4.96 billion, up 98.2% over the same period in 2019.
These numbers were driven by excellent sales of the Nintendo Switch console and games. Nintendo Switch sold 11.56 million units in the third quarter, of which 8.40 million were regular Nintendo Switch models and 3.16 million were Nintendo Switch Lite. The total sales of Nintendo Switch reached 79.87 million units, which means that Nintendo Switch has surpassed the Nintendo 3DS in sales of about 76 million consoles. It was once the best-selling handheld gaming console in the world.
Nintendo recently announced a Switch Special Edition for Mario fans that will be released alongside Super Mario 3D World and Bowser’s Fury, as well as another Special Edition that will include Monster Hunter Rise. The Nintendo Switch will soon surpass Nintendo’s other handheld console, the Game Boy Advance, with sales of 81.51 million units.
The best-selling game this fiscal year was Animal Crossing: New Horizons, with total sales of 31.18 million copies (19.41 million copies annually). Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has amassed 8.64 million copies in a year, with total sales exceeding 34 million.
Six games have surpassed the 20 million mark since Nintendo Switch launched: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Pokemon Sword and Shield, Super Mario Odyssey, Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
