“The Notebook” Turns 20: How Actors Went From Enemies to Lovers

The film “The Notebook” turns 20 since its debut this week.

Starring Ryan Gosling like Noah and Rachel McAdams Like Allie, the film is one of the most beloved romantic comedies by fans and the most famous among the film adaptations of Nicholas Sparks’ books.

However, the loving couple in front of the cameras didn’t get along very well on the film set.

As the director of the film revealed, Nick Cassavetes Gosling and McAdams had a shouting match during the film’s production — which didn’t stop the two from becoming boyfriends a year after its release.

In a 2014 interview with VH1, the director recalled one of the episodes in which they had a falling out: “Maybe I shouldn’t tell this story, but one day they really weren’t getting along on set. They really weren’t.”

“Ryan came up to me, and there were 150 people in this big scene, and he said, ‘Nick, come here.’ He was doing a scene with Rachel and he says, ‘Could you take her out of here and bring another actress to read? [as falas] with me off camera?’ I said, ‘What?’ And he said, ‘I can’t. I can’t do that to her. There’s just no point in it,'” Cassavetes said.

“We went into a room with a producer. They started yelling and screaming at each other. I left… And then it got better, you know? They made up… I think Ryan respected her for defending her character and Rachel was happy to make that clear. The rest of the movie wasn’t very smooth, but it was smoother than that,” she added.

Despite the yelling and fighting in 2003, Gosling and McAdams really seem to have made up. The two came out as boyfriend and girlfriend in 2005 and were together for two years.

In an interview with GQ in 2007, a few months after they had ended their relationship, Ryan Gosling was unable to say exactly what caused the end of the relationship, but assured that it was a joint decision: “We both went down fighting and called it a draw. ”

“I mean, God bless ‘The Notebook,’” Gosling said at the time. “He introduced me to one of the great loves of my life. But people do Rachel and me a disservice by assuming we were like the characters in that movie. My love story with Rachel is much more romantic than that.”

Apology

This week, Cassavetes spoke about the two again and apologized to the actors for the comment that made headlines 10 years ago.

“The last time I gave an interview on this topic, I opened my mouth. I regret. Everyone was like, why are you telling this? I was like, I don’t know. They caught me on a bad day, but if [McAdams e Gosling] “If you’re reading this, I apologize to you. I shouldn’t have told you all that,” he said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly to mark the film’s 20th anniversary.

The director also recalled how the two formed a beautiful couple even after their disagreements: “They fell in love and became a wonderful, passionate couple. I still think they have a lot of respect and love for each other, but in the beginning it wasn’t like that.”

“If you want to know why ‘Diary of a passion’ is considered a romantic classic, the answers are Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, and that’s the beginning and end of it,” the director added.
