One of the most beautiful and famous abbeys in Italy turns 880: theNovacella Abbey, at the gates of Bressanone. He founded it in 1142 the blessed Artmannobishop of Bressanone, and since then the Augustian Canons, who have made Novacella an authentic wonder of the AlpsFor just one year it is not the oldest in Italy (the oldest is Castello di Brolio, founded in 1141 by Baron Ricasoli in the heart of Chianti), but the atmosphere you breathe is that of a place that built the our story. Today is at the same time a center for art and culturewhere you can admire architectural and artistic treasures that have followed one another from the Middle Ages to the modern era and ranging from church which is a jewel of the Swabian-Tyrolean Rococo to the museum which includes among its treasures various triptychs and altarpieces dating back to the late Middle Ages up to the library with 98 thousand volumes among the most beautiful in the southern Germanic area, but also an educational center with a school and a boarding school, and one of the beating hearts of the best South Tyrolean wine.
The wines of the Novacella Abbey
The monks have cultivated grapes since the foundation of the abbey, both on the land that surround it and in nearby areas in the province of Bolzano: hundreds of hectares treated with sustainable agriculture methods, from which are born reds and whites considered to be oenological treasures. Among these the Sylvanerfragrant and fresh white, which comes from a vine that today is grown only in South Tyrol and in particular in the Isarco Valley. A symbol, not by chance chosen to celebrate this important anniversary of the abbey with a special label: it is called «Cor unum et anima una “ and it is a limited edition Sylvaner, of which you have only been produced 880 Magnum bottles, like the number of years that Novacella celebrates in 2022, and 1142 (like the year of its foundation) in 0.75 cl. bottles. Has a’wonderful label engraved directly on the glass of the bottle and comes from a very careful selection of the best Sylvaner grapes of the 2020 vintage, an emblem of the style and philosophy of the best wines of the Novacella Abbey.
«We have decided to call this celebratory wine with a phrase that literally means “One heart and one soul”” explains Werner Waldboth, sales director of Abbazia di Novacella. «He is inspired by one of the norms of the Augustinian Rule which establishes the organization of monastic life. It perfectly interprets the sentiments and the vocation that guide, since its foundation, this historic religious institution, which is also one of the oldest active wineries in the world ».
The visits
The Cor unum et anima una it will be on sale exclusively inside the Abbey’s internal shop: one more opportunity to visit it and discover its beauties. On the occasion of the 880th anniversary, on April 22, Abbot Eduard Fischnaller will bless the cellar e the Chinese hall will be inaugurated in the autumn, inside which there are splendid paintings dating back to 1775-1780 showing scenes of Chinese daily life typical in Rococo Europe.
