The number of cities with gun ownership for GCM grows by more than 30%, says IBGE

The number of municipal guards equipped with firearms, in Brazil, grew 33% between 2019 and 2023. The data was released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), this Thursday (31).

Brazil increased the number of municipal guards who carry some type of weapon, between 2019 and 2023, from 22% of the number to 30%. In cities with up to 10 thousand inhabitants, the increase in the use of firearms by the Guards was, on average, 97% between 2019 and 2023.

The North Region surpassed the others in increasing the use of firearms by its Guards, registering an increase of 110% from 2019 to 2023.

There was an expansion in the scope of activities carried out by the Municipal Guards compared to the results of 2019.

The main task of the Guards was still the protection of the Municipality’s assets, equipment and buildings (92.6%), but the patrolling of public roads became the second most developed activity, in 86.8% of the municipalities.

The number exceeds security activities at events/celebrations, with 83.0%, and assistance to the Military Police in 80.1% of cities in 2019.

In the increase in the obligations of the Municipal Guards, activities to help the public also increased, reaching 83.9%, and educational actions for the population with 78.4%. Social services were found in 60.5% of the municipalities.

Increase in staff

IBGE data show that, between 2019 and 2023, there was an 11.3% increase in the number of municipalities that implemented the Municipal Guard in their public security structure.

The number of permanent guards also increased by 2.4% in the period. AND

Municipalities with a population between 10,000 and 20,000 inhabitants showed the biggest increase, with gains of 21.5% in their total workforce. The South Region stood out the most, with an increase of 9.8%.

The exception in the expansion of the workforce, in recent years, occurred in cities with a population between 50 thousand and 100 thousand and with more than 500 thousand inhabitants – with a decline of 5.6% and 9.1%, respectively – in addition to the Central Region. Oeste, which recorded a 2.9% decrease in the number of its security forces.

Class had an increase in earnings

The category has seen significant salary gains over the last four years. Between 2019 and 2023, there was a significant increase in the starting career salary of these professionals in several municipalities.

The number of city halls that paid up to R$1,000 as a starting salary was 289 for 8 cities in the period analyzed.

The data also indicates that there was a 307.8% increase in the number of cities whose starting salary for the Guard was between R$3,000 and R$5,000. The number of municipalities that pay more than R$5,000 for career beginners was 1 in 18 places.

Among those who established a career plan for these professionals, in relation to 2019, there was a growth of 25.3%. In cities with up to 5 thousand inhabitants, this percentage increase was 76.7%.
