The number of crypto frauds on Telegram has increased by 2,000%

The number of attacks on cryptocurrency investors in the Telegram messenger has exceeded the number of traditional phishing schemes. From November 2024 to January 2025, the frequency of such incidents skyrocketed by 2,000%.

According to Scam Snifferfraud with malicious software (software) in Telegram is becoming increasingly popular among cryptocameras.

Telegram users should be careful

If you look at the graph published by Scam Sniffer, you can conclude that attacks on crypto investors on Telegram are far superior to traditional phishing schemes.

According to a cybersecurity expert, crypto scammers use more sophisticated methods compared to typical phishing. Scam Sniffer highlighted the following:

  • Fake bots for verification. Masquerading as security tools, these bots trick users into executing malicious commands.
  • Fake channels for crypto trading and airdrops. The creators of these groups lure victims with promises of exclusive investment opportunities or free cryptocurrency.
  • “Exclusive” alpha groups. Fraudsters pretend to be crypto-influencers and promise exclusive access to their channel, which is actually a phishing channel.

In this way, crypto cameras try to steal users’ confidential information. In particular, passwords, wallet files, browser data and even the clipboard are all things that can be used to steal cryptocurrency.

Scam Sniffer noted that attackers are changing tactics as users become more aware of phishing and other methods of stealing digital assets.

In order not to lose cryptocurrency, the expert advises not to execute unknown commands or run incomprehensible scripts from unreliable sources. Scam Sniffer also recommends not installing unverified software, which is sometimes advertised by Telegram channels.

Telegram and crypto fraud

Cybersecurity specialists are increasingly identifying channels on Telegram that promote fraudulent schemes.

Scammers often impersonate well-known personalities in the crypto industry, inviting users to “exclusive” groups. Back in December, Scam Sniffer talked about how these attackers are using fake verification bots to inject malicious PowerShell code into victims’ systems.

“A new complex scheme has emerged that targets crypto users through fake Telegram channels. Attackers pose as crypto-influencers and use malicious bots for verification,” he wrote in X.

Telegram is often criticized for the messenger’s approach to combating crypto fraud. Last year, Spanish authorities temporarily blocked the platform. The government has received complaints from major media companies that the site promotes fraud and piracy.

Under the latest Scam Sniffer investigation, you can also find many negative comments regarding Telegram’s policies.

“No, damn it, Telegram doesn’t give a damn about that either,” noted one user.

Concerns about fraud control on the platform intensified after the arrest of the messenger’s CEO Pavel Durov. French authorities accuse him of complicity in illegal transactions related to organized crime through Telegram.
