The number of deaths from shipwreck in Pará rises to 18; 3 victims are children

The number of deaths after the shipwreck near Praia da Saudade beach, in Cotijuba, 22 kilometers from Belém (PA), has risen to 18, as authorities reported this Friday (9).

Previous information, released by the authorities, shows that 82 people were on board the vessel that sank this Thursday (8). The boat was not authorized to carry out intercity passenger transport.

So far, 65 survivors have been rescued and taken to Belém. 18 deaths were confirmed, 10 women, 05 men and 03 children.

The Secretary of Public Security and Social Defense (Segup), Ualame Machado, said that measures to locate and support victims were intensified.

“Still in the early hours of this morning, we resumed the search at the accident site and in nearby areas, managing to locate other bodies, totaling 18 people so far, unfortunately. But still during the morning, we also confirmed two more people rescued alive in the municipality of Ponta de Pedras, who were found by riverside people who passed through there at the time of the accident”, he said.

the vessel’s driver Dona Lourdes 2 was identified as Marcos de Souza Oliveira, so far he has not been found by the police. The clandestine speedboat type boat belongs to the driver’s mother, Meire Ferreira de Sousa.

“We reiterate that the cause of the accident is analyzed by the Brazilian Navy, which has already established its own procedure, which will even subsidize our police investigation. Therefore, we are acting, so that we can quickly have more clarifications about what happened”, said the owner of Segup.

In a statement, the Civil Police reported that it has launched a police investigation to investigate the shipwreck that took place on Thursday (8).

“Diligences are being conducted, through the Specialized River Police Station, to hear witnesses and gather more information about what happened”.
