The number of deaths from the Ômicron variant in Brazil rises to four

Rio Grande do Sul recorded the first two deaths of people infected with the Ômicron variant of the coronavirus this Monday (17). Thus, the total number of deaths from the new strain in Brazil rose to four, according to a survey by the CNN Agency.

The first death was recorded in Aparecida de Goiânia (GO), on January 6th. The other death occurred in Alagoas.

The deaths confirmed today in Rio Grande do Sul are an 88-year-old man, who lived in Sapiranga, and an 86-year-old woman, a resident of Progresso. According to the statement from the state health department, there are 21 cases confirmed by complete genetic sequencing of the new variant.

The Central Laboratory of Rio Grande do Sul (Lacen/RS) carried out the genetic identification of the variant in these two cases.

Also according to the note, the two patients were vaccinated against Covid-19 and had comorbidities. The first symptoms in these people appeared on December 31st and January 1st, and the deaths occurred on the 2nd and 5th of this month.
