The number of deaths in a bus accident in Alagoas rises to 20

The number of deaths in the accident involving a bus that fell into a cliff in the interior of Alagoas last Sunday (24) rose to 20. The information was confirmed this Friday (29) by the State Department of Health. The last confirmed death was that of the patient identified as Pedro Manoel da Silva, aged 65.

The ministry states that, after undergoing surgery due to several fractures caused by the accident, the victim was intubated at the Hospital Regional da Mata (HRM), but could not resist the severity of the injuries and died this Friday.

The folder also highlights that the body was sent to the Legal Medical Institute (IML) to determine the cause of death.

Seven patients still remain hospitalized in public hospital units for recovery.

The bus with 45 passengers fell off a cliff in the city of União dos Palmares, in Alagoas. See images of the accident here. The accident occurred in the region known as “Serra da Barriga”, in the interior of the state.

The Civil Police reported that the União dos Palmares Regional Police Station has already opened an investigation to investigate the causes of the incident.

Bus failure

At a press conference, delegate Guilherme Martin Iusten, responsible for investigating the accident, stated that the bus driver had reported problems with the vehicle’s operation to his wife before leaving for work.

The delegate confirmed the wife’s report, given to the local portal “Gazeta Web” and reported that he received the statement officially. On the portal, the driver’s wife said that, before leaving for work, the man reported that the bus would not go up Serra da Barriga, in the city of União dos Palmares, in the interior of Alagoas.
