The number of deaths in India due to consumption of adulterated alcohol has risen to 54

The death toll from the latest incident of adulterated alcohol in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu has risen to 54, with more than 100 people still in hospital, a government official said today. Since Wednesday, nearly 200 people with vomiting, stomach pain and diarrhea have sought medical help after consuming liquor mixed with methanol in Kalakurichi district, about 250 km from the state capital Chennai. Police arrested seven people, the state government said today. Deaths from illegally produced alcohol are a common occurrence in India, where many cannot afford to buy branded liquor. The government in Tamil Nadu said it was taking steps to identify those involved in the production of methanol – a toxic chemical normally meant for industrial use. Source: RES
