The number of patients who lost their eyes after a cataract effort in RN rises to 10

The number of people who lost their eyeballs after being infected by bacteria following cataract surgery promoted by the City Council of Parelhas (RN) (245 kilometers from Natal) on September 27th rose to ten. The information was confirmed by the municipal administration this Thursday (24).

The tenth patient who needed to remove his eyeball is an 84-year-old man. The victim underwent surgery on Wednesday night (23). The city hall informed that it should deliver the report of the civil inquiry investigating the case to the Public Ministry tomorrow.

Among the 20 surgical procedures performed at the Dr. Graciliano Lordão Maternity Hospital, 15 patients showed symptoms of endophthalmitis, an eye infection caused by the bacteria Enterobacter cloacae.

Of these, ten lost their eyeballs, four had to undergo vitrectomy (a surgery to remove fluid from the eye), and one is still being monitored.

The city became a highlight after patients lost their eyes, following a cataract surgery effort in the state, on September 27th of this year. Among the most serious cases is that of hairdresser Izabel Maria dos Santos Souza, aged 63, who was hospitalized after the bacteria spread to her eyelid.

What those involved say

Parelhas City Hall reported that “accreditation for surgical procedures strictly followed all legal procedures, with market research, registration on the Public Procurement Portal and submission to the Court of Auditors, ensuring total transparency”.

The Municipal Health Department said it immediately notified state and national health authorities, in accordance with the standards for reporting infectious outbreaks.

The Public Health Department of Rio Grande do Norte is also monitoring the case and stated that the surgeries were carried out as a result of a contract made by the municipal management, without state participation.

After the conclusion of the civil investigation, which remains confidential, the reports will be forwarded to the Public Ministry of Rio Grande do Norte (MP-RN).

Last Friday (18), prosecutor Ana Jovina de Oliveira Ferreira, from MP-RN stated that the city hall will be obliged to compensate patients infected during the collective effort.
