The number of people killed by the rains in Minas Gerais rises to 21, says Civil Defense

The death toll as a result of heavy rains in Minas Gerais rose to 21 this Wednesday (11).

The information was confirmed by the state coordinator of the Civil Defense of the state, Colonel Osvaldo de Souza Marques, at CNN Radio.

“We had the flood of information that took some people, and unfortunately we had a new death, of a young man”, he said.

So far, there are 131 municipalities in a state of emergency, but, according to the colonel, “this number should increase reasonably.”

He points out that the month of January will be “historically very rainy”: “The rain ceased from yesterday to today, but we cannot lose focus on alertness, light and constant rain can cause soil saturation and geological risk. ”

The colonel points out that the Civil Defense has been committed since September 2022 to trying to “mitigate the impacts on the preservation of the citizen’s life.”

“We issue alerts to all municipalities, so that the population’s self-protection measures are taken,” he added.

He reinforces that “raising the population’s awareness is essential for them to leave their homes, seek shelter with relatives, friends or even public shelters.”

The Civil Defense has an SMS service, in which the citizen sends the CEP to the number 40199 and receives the alert for his/her location.

“This gives citizens conditions to have adequate response time”, he concluded.
