Army Weapons

The numbers of weapons seized were released by the Rio de Janeiro government after the Rio Civil Police reported, last Thursday (19), that it recovered eight of the 21 machine guns that disappeared from the war arsenal, in an Armed Forces barracks, in Barueri, in the metropolitan region of São Paulo. The weapons found were inside a stolen car in the Gardênia Azul neighborhood, in the west zone of the capital of Rio de Janeiro.

Another nine weapons were found in Carapicuíba, a city neighboring Barueri, in the early hours of Saturday (21). As a result, 17 of the 21 missing weapons were found.

According to public security expert Paulo Storani, the existence of weapons diverted from security forces is a major concern.

“The diversion of military material from the Armed Forces and also from the police is always a serious problem, since it is controlled material, which should be well guarded,” said Storani. “And when it occurs, it shows the vulnerability of this guard and protection system, and it is also necessary that it be held accountable and that structures be improved so that this does not happen.”

But Storani points out that most of the weapons recovered in Rio are not the result of diversion. “Faced with a large number of weapons that were seized, and this year here in Rio de Janeiro we had a record, the number of weapons that originated from these weapons reserves is very small. They occur but have no representation in the quantity of weapons that are seized because the routes they take are poorly monitored, mainly ports and airports, but they end up, in the end, producing this large quantity that we have seized in recent times”, I told CNN .
