The number of victims in Pernambuco rises to 126 due to heavy rains

“We saw each other every day. We thought it odd that he didn’t show up on Sunday. The last time we saw each other was on Saturday morning, when we had breakfast.”

Also at the IML, the report by CNN talked to the father of the 7-year-old child, who died buried in Vila dos Milagres, West Zone of the capital of Pernambuco. He declined to be identified, but said the son lived with his mother and other relatives. The body of the child was removed by the Fire Department late Wednesday morning and will be buried on Thursday afternoon.

According to a report released by the Civil Defense in the early afternoon, the number of people who died because of the rain in the state rose to 126. Firefighters rescued two more victims from the rains in the last 12 hours.

The bodies were found in Curado IV, in Jaboatão dos Guararapes, and in Vila dos Milagres, in Recife. Another four victims of the storms were incorporated into the statistics after a social investigation at the IML. This brings the total death toll to 126, with at least two people still missing.

One of them in a landslide in Camaragibe and the other is a man who was dragged by the flood in Paratibe, in Paulista, in the Metropolitan region of Recife. The searches, which are on the sixth day, continue in these locations.

“Firefighters remain working in the Areeiro community, in Camaragibe, with the help of sniffer dogs, to locate the last person who remains missing at the scene. In Paratibe, military personnel from the Navy are assisting in the searches”, informs the Civil Defense note.

The number of homeless has also increased. It rose to 9,302 people who are housed in 111 institutions in 27 municipalities. In total, 31 cities in Pernambuco declared a state of emergency and 51 suffered some type of damage as a result of the rain.

So far, of the 31 municipalities in Pernambuco in an emergency situation, 14 have been registered in the Integrated Disaster Information System (S2ID) and are able to receive resources to recover from damage caused by the storm.
